The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is pleased to announce that the Pre-K – 8 Family Guides for Student Success are now available in Spanish. Like all students, English language learners (ELLs) benefit from their parents’ involvement in their education. MDE is committed to supporting parents’ understanding of the learning process and providing them with the guidance needed to ensure their children become College and Career Ready. Thanks to our community partner, Trinity Episcopal Church, 50 students were selected to attend the USM vs. Charlotte game on Saturday, November 5, 2016. Students were chosen from a group of over 100 students that earned 10 PBIS tickets during the month of October. As a PBIS model school site, we continue to encourage positive behavior and a focus on academics.
The Mississippi Department of Education has created a new blog, Mississippi Achieves. The blog is geared toward a broad audience of educators, parents and others with an interest in public education in Mississippi. Mississippi Achieves is a venue to celebrate how high academic standards are positively affecting teaching and learning. We expect it will also become a forum for educators to exchange information and resources.
The trajectory of education in Mississippi is changing. Our graduation rate has reached an historic high, our drop-out rate is declining, and our students are achieving better academic outcomes than ever before.
Mississippians now have powerful evidence that the education reforms that have been implemented throughout our state are working. This validates the work of all of the students, teachers, school administrators, state leaders and parents who have dedicated themselves to improving student achievement.

Students earning their Masters of Social Work degree at USM will be in your neighborhood Tuesday, November 1 through Friday, November 11.
The students are working with Edwards Street Fellowship Center and our school to improve services in this community. They will be doing a short survey interview and need your participation, because your voice matters! They would love to hear from you, so be on the lookout for them in the next two weeks. They will be wearing black and gold USM t-shirts.

The Mississippi Department of Education is committed to supporting parents’ understanding of the learning process and providing them with the guidance needed to ensure their children become College and Career Ready. The Office of Student Intervention Services, in collaboration with classroom teachers, developed the Pre-K – 8 Family Guides for Student Success to assist parents with grade-level at home strategies and activities that support the mastery of the English Language Arts (ELA) and Math Standards. Over the next few days, you will be receiving a shipment of the guides to distribute between the schools in your district. Since the number is much less than your parent count, we that you reference the following attached document for suggestions, practical tips, and guidance on the use of the Family Guides for Student Success.
